Guy Mason Recreation Center & Park
— A Neighborhood Treasure —
At its founding more than a decade ago, the organizers of Friends of Guy Mason Recreation Center had a clear vision of restoring vitality to the programs and facilities of the Center as an integrated whole — the arts and crafts programs inside the building, the playground, the ball field, the trees, and the open spaces. They believed that improvements initiated by the Friends organization would bring more users to Guy Mason, contribute to a sense of community, and encourage the city to respond with substantial investments of its own in the Center.

We now see daily evidence of the strength of this vision. In almost every aspect the Center is well used, well loved, and thriving. The Friends organization has continued to be involved in this ongoing process of renewing and revitalizing.  In addition to our regular annual activities of tree pruning and upkeep of the grounds, dog park and gardens, we made a major improvement to the paved court by installing new basketball backboards and hoops.  We were pleased and honored in the past year to have played a role in bringing the vision of Hadley Boyd and John Parachini to reality.  Thanks to their extraordinary generosity and enterprise, we now have a bigger, more beautiful, more stimulating playground.

A major focus of this year will be working with the city government on their emerging plans to renovate the Guy Mason building. We had been very hopeful last year that the city would undertake a project which included both a full renovation of the existing building and a sizable building addition.  It now appears that budget realities will compel a deferral of the addition.  It is critical that the Friends organization be a strong advocate for the needs of the community as the city planners attempt to adjust their planning to the new realities.

We hope that you will be able to support Guy Mason this year.
